One thing San Francisco buyers don’t always factor in: living in Marin puts you on the right side of the bridge for wine country. From central and north Marin you can be tasting in Sonoma or Napa in under an hour, without crossing the Golden Gate or Bay Bridge.

Novato is the closest Marin city to both valleys. Weekend traffic on Highway 37 can be heavy, so leave early.

Car-free option: the SMART train

SMART runs 48 miles from the Larkspur ferry through San Rafael and Novato to Windsor in Sonoma County, with an extension to Healdsburg scheduled to open in December 2028.

Where to live for easy wine country weekends

If wine country is a regular part of your life, look at Novato, San Rafael (especially Lucas Valley and Terra Linda) and the Ross Valley. You’ll save meaningful time every weekend compared with southern Marin.

Financing in Marin. Many Marin homes need jumbo financing: the 2026 conforming limit here is $1,249,125, so with 20% down, homes above about $1.56 million usually mean a jumbo loan. Marin has its own wine country, too

Most people don’t realize that part of Marin County is officially wine country. The Petaluma Gap appellation, established in December 2017, covers parts of both Sonoma and Marin counties. It is defined by the wind: a steady afternoon breeze off the Pacific that slows ripening and gives the grapes thicker skins and more concentrated flavor. About 75 percent of the vineyards are planted to Pinot Noir, followed by Chardonnay and Syrah.

Closer to home, McEvoy Ranch offers tastings and tours by appointment, and Trek Winery has a tasting room in Novato. Neither one requires getting on Highway 37 on a Saturday.

Which valley for which weekend

  • Sonoma is the closest, about 40 minutes from San Rafael without traffic. The historic plaza makes it easy to walk between tasting rooms and lunch.
  • Carneros sits between Sonoma and Napa along Highway 121, so it is the first wine region you reach from Marin. Cool, bay-influenced vineyards known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wine.
  • Napa is about 50 minutes from San Rafael. Plan ahead: many wineries now require reservations.
  • Healdsburg is about an hour up US-101 and works well for an overnight, with the Russian River and Dry Creek valleys nearby.

A few things I’ve learned

  • Leave early. Weekend traffic on Highway 37 can be heavy, especially in the afternoon heading home.
  • Book ahead. Many tasting rooms in Napa and Sonoma are appointment only, especially on weekends.
  • Let someone else drive, or take SMART north from San Rafael or Novato and plan a day around the stations.
  • Stop in Petaluma on the way. It is right on 101, and it sits at the heart of the Petaluma Gap.
